Hoeffel had already resigned elections board Wednesday
Montgomery County Commissioner Joe Hoeffel had already resigned from the local elections board Wednesday morning, hours before the county GOP called on him to take that action.
Hoeffel told pa2010.com that the local solicitor’s office had advised him on Tuesday that he should step aside as he seeks the Democratic nomination for governor.
“I immediately realized that was true and I authorized the solicitor’s office to notify the President Judge that he would soon be making an appointment to replace,” Hoeffel said.
He formally resigned early Wednesday morning, and notified both of his fellow county commissioners.
“[GOP chairman] Bob Kerns is correct that i should step down as a function of the law,” Hoeffel said. “The law says a commissioner running for office may not serve on the election board. There’s no quarrel over the correctness of the action to step down.
“But I had already stepped down before Bob tried to stir up a little partisan mischief,” Hoeffel said.

Dan .. I am for Wagner but I must say that this type of bs political spat does not deserve this level of coverage at all. It is incredibly irrelevant. People are having a hard time economically. The State is corrupted by pay to play. Our country is in serious trouble and engaged in two wars. Please do not elevate this kind of thing into several diaries. Just update the first one.

Dan,
The real story is why Joe Hoeffel remained on the Election Board when he was a candidate for delegate to the DNC last year. He mediated polling place disputes and issues on Election Day when he himself was a candidate.
That’s just plain wrong.

Knox 2010-
Delegate selection is internal party BS. It’s not a publicly elected position, nor a paid position, nor funded by taxpayers.
The actual delegates selected is almost meaningless, since the delegates are going to vote based on which candidate won the district. It’s just an excuse to go to a convention and party.

Wasn’t Bruce Castor running for replublican state committee in the same election that Hoeffel ran for delegate? Where was Kern’s outrage then?

Did it say Senior on the ballot?

It is not incumbent upon Sr to distinguish himself as Jr does via using Bruce L Castor Jr

Nice try MCRC. Couldn’t hold on to control of the county, so it’s no wonder they’re trying to take it out on Joe.

Actually they did hold onto control of the county. Jim Matthews singlehandedly gave it away because he has no ethics, no morals and no beliefs.
Kind of like the guy all the Democrats will be trying to elect Senator next year.
I like that response though. “Did it say Senior on the ballot?” as though that would somehow change the premise of the question “Where was Kern’s outrage then?”
If Democrats had any stones they’d be calling for Matthews to step down too. He’s running for Lt. Governor.

Dave Diano: It was an election. It was a contested election subject to the same laws and rules of fair election conduct as any other.
The same opportunities for mischief in favor of Hoeffel’s own candidacy exist whether he is running for dog catcher or President. Public or political. That is why they cede their position on the Election Board.
A lot will come out about Hoeffel and what he’s been doing in Norristown the last two years. Stay tuned…
