Sestak, Toomey to talk health care in joint town hall

How’s this for an early campaign season?

Months before it’s even determined if they’ll be general election opponents, Republican Pat Toomey and Democrat Joe Sestak will face off Sept. 2 in town hall meeting about health care.

The announcement Friday came after a spirited back-and-forth in the press, in which Toomey and Sestak debated the merits of the policies emerging in Congress. Eventually, Sestak invited Toomey to discuss the matter in person, and Toomey accepted.

Toomey, the former Congressman, gets the home-field advantage, with the event set to take place at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, where the Republican Senate candidate’s campaign is based. Toomey wants Muhlenberg pollster Chris Borick to moderate.

And not surprisingly, Toomey just couldn’t pass up a chance for a little Arlen Specter bashing.

“While I look forward to a substantive debate about honest differences with Congressman Sestak, I wish such an exchange was possible with Arlen Specter,” Toomey said in a statement. “Unfortunately, with Senator Specter, one never knows which Arlen Specter will show up—the May 2009 version who opposed a public health care option, or the August 2009 version who ardently supports it. “

Sestak is playing into Toomey’s hands in order to promote himself.

Toomey’s been looking for a microphone (outside of Hannity and Fox), and Sestak just handed him one. BTW, Toomey was introduced on Hannity as the guy running against Specter in November (no mention of Sestak).

So now, instead of having quality time defending/explaining Obama’s plan to concerned (and misinformed) citizens, Sestak gets half as much time. Meanwhile, while Toomey gets to spread half-truths, distortions and lies from an elevated position equal to Sestak.

Sestak’s a sitting congressman, who has to vote on these issues. Toomey is neither. Sestak’s outside his district, instead of with his constituents.

If Sestak wants to travel outside his district to promote Obama’s plan, then he should be HELPING Specter by showing unity, instead of undermining him at every turn.

As usual, Sestak’s putting politics and his own personal agenda over policy and the public good.

Specter has enough brains not to bring Toomey into a debate about an issue that Toomey isn’t voting on. 2010 may be a referendum on the Health Care bill that is passed in 2009, but that’s a different debate to have with Toomey, defending the vote and outcome. But, to engage in debate with Toomey now is premature.

    Tortoise and the Hares.

Isn’t it refreshing to see the press releases put out by Pat Toomey and Joe Sestak.

I commend both of these individuals for the exchanges between these men this past week.

Professional, courteous, inquistive of the other, and yet both strong and “principled” in their beliefs.

What a contrast with Arlen Specter’s press releases that have been personal in their attacks upon both Toomey (when Specter was registered as a Republican) and now Sestak (given Specter’s recent party-switch to the Democrats).

I can’t think of any other town hall this summer either in PA, or elsewhere in the nation, that has featured such a promient Republican and Democrat on the same stage discussing the merits of health care reform. persepective. Given the promience of this race, it should be a classic debate.

I hope that C-Span or one of the other cable networks carries it live — it really would be a good demonstration of democracy at work, and benefit/educate the voters of our state on the top issue in the country.

“Professional, courteous, inquisitive of the other, and yet both strong and “principled” in their beliefs.”
You’ve got to be kidding. Neither one of them gives a rats a$$ about the other’s views or is looking to be swayed. This is purely about each of them trying to raise his profile.

Toomey is a right-wing zealot and Sestak is pompous opportunist. They’ve both attacked Specter personally and professionally.

Sestak has refused to come to the aid of Specter, who’s been fighting hard for Obama’s health care goals. Toomey’s taking advantage of Sestak’s selfishness and naivete to damage Specter and raise awareness of his own candidacy and name recognition.

These two belong together (in the pile of candidates Specter has defeated).

“Sestak has refused to come to the aid of Specter, who’s been fighting hard for Obama’s health care goals.”

That’s a good one, David. Sestak should come to the aid of Specter? Not to the aid of Obama. Not to the aid of healthcare insurance regform. To the aid of Specter. Thanks for the good weekend laugh.

Coming to the aid of Specter on the health care issue is the same as coming to the aid of Obama. Sestak should be supporting, not undermining, Democrats fighting for healthcare reform. Specter took the heat in tough town halls, and Sestak keeps questioning Specter commitment.

What else should we expect from a self-promoter like Sestak? He went along with Hillary’s comment that she and McCain were more ready to be Commander in Chief than Obama. Sestak has repeated demonstrated ZERO allegiance to his fellow Dems if he could step over them to advance himself.

All you need to do is look at how happy the Toomey people are to realize how much Sestak is hurting the Dems and helping the GOP.

I don’t want a Senator representing me that needs “assistance” … that’s exactly why it’s time for Specter to get off the stage.

In one fell swoop, Toomey and Sestak just demonstrated the irrelevance of Specter to the future of PA.

Diano, your lack of credibility has been demonstrated on the board myriad times. You’re nothing but a party hack and an ultra left-wing liberal who has drunk so deeply of the kool-aid you believe your own screed, such as that you can affirmative action without racial quotas. Suggestion: Move to Vermont where you’ll fit in much better.

    Simon-
We’ve got a President and a party that needs help in the form of unity to respond to the attacks and disinformation from the Right-wing. Specter’s part of the party and doesn’t need a selfish amateur mucking up the works. Sestak’s got ZERO party loyalty.
As for “assistance” how weak is Sestak if he needs Toomey and is willing to concede half the time he should be spending debunking to giving Toomey a forum to spread disinformation.
It’s a bad strategic move for the party, and a selfish tactical move by Sestak.

    Abe-
Are you against affirmative action and for racial discrimination against minorities, using the false argument that affirmative action is discrimination against whites?
If that’s the way you think, then I’d be more worried if you agreed with me on the issues.

I think that Sestak and Toomey both have the same problem… that is, staying relevant at times in the health care debate.

  10. Sorry

    Sep 2nd, 2009

    Mr. Diano,

I do not know who you are but you offend me deeply as I am a republican and you sir do not know me. You are a bit uncouth, you speak of truth sir but have no authority to that truth. Sir my mother is on the goverment medicare as is my husband let me be clear sir the private healthcare we purchased was better. Mr. Toomey is not lying sir and it is your practice of poison politics that is without honor here. I am confidant that the voters of PA will verify before they buy!

  11. Sorry

By the way your argument for affirmative action and the old faithful racist card is also off mark. Any one with the ambition can achive in this country and as you know the current president bear witness to the fact!!
