Rasmussen shows Specter up 13 in Senate primary
Senator Arlen Specter maintains a double-digit lead over Congressman Joe Sestak (D-7) in next year’s Democratic primary, according to a new poll.
The Rasmussen survey released Wednesday showed Specter garnering 47 percent of the vote, compared to 34 percent for Sestak. Sixteen percent were undecided.
The poll of 423 likely primary voters showed Specter’s lead narrowing from 19 points in June.

The spread in the polls likely will go up and down over the next 9 months till the primary. That’s a long time in a campaign. As Sestak has become a little more well known, I thnk it was predictable that the gap would close in his favor. It would be interesting to see a graph showing the trend of the polls from now till the end of the year.
If Sestak can get to single digits by the time most voters begin to pay attention during 2010, the campaign will be a real barn burner. Let democracy ring.

While these are improved numbers for Sestak, let’s not forget it’s a Rasmussen poll. The Quinnipiac poll from June showed twice the gap as Rasmussen.
So, the improvement is relative.
I would not be surprised if the next legitimate poll (ie Quinnipiac) showed the race tightening to the 15 to 25 point range.
However, until Specter gets a chance to vote on the Health Care bill and the EFCA, all of these polls are irrelevant.
Dem Specter is held back by the specter of GOP Specter. Once he’s had the opportunity to cast some more decisive votes, the polls will be more meaningful.

I agree that any poll showing the race close will tend to raise interest in Sestak in a “self-fulfilling prophecy” sort of way.
It’s a long time until May, and the challenge for Sestak is getting people to care, if Specter is doing a good job.
