Rasmussen poll says Toomey would top both Specter, Sestak

Rasmussen poll says Toomey would top both Specter, Sestak

For the first time, Republican Senate candidate Pat Toomey is holding a clear and commanding lead in a general election poll.

A Rasmussen survey released Thursday morning showed Toomey topping Senator Arlen Specter by 12 points in a potential 2010 matchup, 48 percent to 36 percent. In the same poll, Toomey would beat Congressman Joe Sestak (D-7) by 8 points, 43 percent to 35 percent.

In each case, the proportion of undecided voters is equal to or greater than Toomey’s lead.

The telephone survey of 1,000 likely voters is dramatically different from any poll findings to date, making them sure to be questioned by both Democratic candidates, and just as certain to be widely hyped by the Toomey campaign. Other polls had shown Toomey gaining on Specter, but this is the first to show him with a statistically significant lead. And unlike previous polls, Toomey’s margin against Specter is actually better than against the relatively-unknown Sestak.

Conducted earlier this week, the poll, with a margin of error of 3 percent, reflects deep dissatisfaction with Specter as the debate over health care reform heats up. Only 43 percent of respondents had a favorable view of Specter, compared with 54 percent who view him unfavorably.

Toomey wants to run against Specter. He is going to cream that old man. Sestak is the Democrat’s best shot. He has none of Specter’s considerable baggage and is a fresh face with a great story to tell.

The GOP is changing its mission and messengers. With strong, proud men like Toomey we can stop the Obama agenda and we can even dream of the day when we eliminate Social Security, Medicare, public education and all the other socialist programs that have been imposed on us.

Hahahha… when everyone sees Toomey is to the right of Santorum, Specter will smash him.

This is a another one of Rasmussen’s bogus pro-conservative polls.
The 70% of the country wants health care reform, so the Rasmussen number 42% for and 53% against doesn’t jibe. The Republicans have had some success at misrepresenting the health care proposals and what it contains, but that can be countered.

    This result makes NO sense:
“Eighty percent (80%) of Republican voters now favor Toomey in a match-up with Specter, up from 68% two months ago. Specter draws 61% of the Democratic vote, down from 74% in June.”

Toomey is to the Right of Santorum. No chance that Specter gets less than 85% of Democratic votes in a matchup.

Since this poll shows Toomey beating Sestak, the Sestak campaign would be foolish to cherry-pick and tout the narrowed gap with Specter.

Basically, I call b*llsh*t on Rasmussen.

You poor, deluded pawns. Our ideas are winning again. No government. No taxes. No corruption.

No intelligence. No solutions. No jobs. No accountability.

Sounds like how President McCain and Vice-President
    Palin won.

No government no taxes no corruption…. hmmm…the GOP, are you seriously kidding me? The premise “No government” presupposes that anyone that doesnt believe in government should not to want to become a part of the government to run it. Kind of hypocritical dont you think? A huge lie… your “little government” under GWB. No corruption and the GOP… try saying that with a straight face. Taxes… yes the GOP and tax breaks for rich people. We know your sham.

I’d like to see what Nate Silver has to say about this. It’s a good opening for the Sestak folks to begin setting up an electability argument though. Specter is 100% known by voters. That disapproval is real. There’s plenty of time, however, for the electoral campaigns to fill in the blanks on Toomey and Sestak. The only potentially-durable finding here is that the electorate is firmly against reelecting Arlen Specter.

    No government = anarachy
No taxes = no roads, schools, military, etc
No corruption = no humans but robot overlords instead

I don’t know that the polls are really that good this far out, with neither Toomey nor Sestak having much statewide name recognition.

Betch this shows up on Hannity. He had Toomey on the other day.

Interestingly, they referred to Toomey vs Specter (and not Sestak) as though Specter was the Dem winner. Meaningless as everything else on Hannity, but interesting as to their thinking.

Wanna see Diano get tongue-tied and get exposed for being the idiot that he is? Answer this: On what issues is Toomey more conservative than Santorum?

  13. David Diano

    Aug 13th, 2009

Santorum endorsed Specter over Toomey in 2004. :-)

Toomey’s more extreme on taxes (President Club for Growth). And, I’m pretty sure he’s even further on anti-abortion issue. He’s supported some really far out candidates locally. Even though he and Santorum have similar 0% NARAL records, Toomey appears to be willing to have harsher rules and push the issue harder as a priority.

Toomey’s overall conservative scores are higher than Santorum’s.

Umm, David, regarding Rasmussen, ever consider that some of the alleged 70% who want health care reform just don’t like the particular choice currently at center stage?

I call BS on you for not actually reading what they were polling on.

Regardless, the tide has turned and Obama & Co. have lost the edge. For better or worse, this epic fail will dog the administration for a long time.

Abe, I believe the phrase is “You just got owned.”

Come on, Toomey only managed to earn a 6% from the Alliance for Retired Americans rating him as having an “anti-retiree voting record.”

    He was rated as anti-abortion rights, anti-environment, anti-labor, anti-public education, anti-public health, and anti-rehabilitation.

    Russ-
I think that among the 70% that want health care reform, the opponents of reform have managed to scare, confuse and mislead many. I don’t put a lot of stock in Rasmussen polling because of it’s conservative bias.

The battle isn’t over and neither is the war for health care reform. The Democrats are starting to regroup and get back on message. However, the Dem leadership has been ineffective in getting these Blue Dogs Dems to do the right thing and not sell out to the insurance companies.

    1. Show me the cross tabs. What were the GOP vs. Democratic vs. independent registrations in the sample?

    2. Toomey will get hammered in SE PA regardless of who wins the Democratic primary. Where will he make up that deficit?

PA is if anything bluer today than when Casey blew Santorum’s doors off. Find me a scenario where someone as far to the right as Santorum and Toomey can defeat a centrist – which defines both Specter and Sestak whatever baggage they may bring to the dance.

I live in the 7th and enjoy the BS I see on here, it is good for a good laugh. Most folks either want to get rid of him and kick him upstairs, others just want a real democrat. I never thought I would see me voting for Specter but I am. Many things I will never forgive him for, such as the magic bullett theory, Anita Hill etc. but he has seniority, has worked hard for 40 years and now has come back home to where he always should have been.Never voted for him before but we all gather round him to send him back to the US Senate Sestak is going to be lucky to win his own district. What has he ever done for the people of the 7th. He can go sink a ship and do everyone a favor.

And Ramussen said what ? Are there still people in PA that believes a word from them Do you know of anyone, just one that has been polled by Ramussen.and if you do it has to be a member of the GOP

    Lana-
I hope you show up at some Dem events. I think I’m in love. :-)

    BTW, I was right….
Hannity DID discuss the poll (selectively) to promote Toomey.

    Lana,

Rasmussen is widely regarded by nonpartisan observers and news sources as one fo the most accurate polls out there (it was voted by Slate Mag, and the WSJ as the most accurate pollic source in the 2004, 2006, and 2008 elections), so you bet people pay attention to what they say. Nobody jump down my throat at this as I am not saying anythign about this recent Toomey/Specter/Sestak poll but, don’t fool yourself into just disregrding polls that you don’t like to figures from either.

That said, I imagine that the Daily Kos polls might be more up your alley-and it shows a race that, while not as dramatic as the latest Rasmussen poll, has tightened significantly. Specter over Toomey by 5% and Sestak over Toomey by 1%. Anyone who’s quick to cal bulls**t on Rasmussen should at LEAST think twice about the Daily Kos.

Actually, I thought Zogby had a better track record than Rasmussen. Rasmussen himself is an arch conservative. I have often found them skewed. to some extent, I think their poll results actually shift outcomes by being given too much weight and encouraging/discouraging voters toward conservative outcomes.

I think Rasmussen is BS on Toomey being so far ahead of Specter and Sestak. The tightening with Specter would make sense, given Sestak’s raised profile. But Rasmussen is like a stopped clock that is right twice a day. Any poll that shows Toomey doing that well has something fundamentally wrong with it, and should not be trusted for any other results (even if they match other polls by coincidence).
