Onorato gets a reassessment setback
The state Supreme Court on Friday brought property-tax reassessments one step closer to a political headache for Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato, when it ruled that the county cannot delay while it seeks help from Harrisburg.
Onorato, who is almost certainly running for governor, faces a looming political obstacle in his court-ordered mandate to conduct county-wide property-tax reassessments that will almost certainly lead to steep tax increases. He had asked the state Supreme Court to give the county more time as it lobbies Harrisburg to implement a statewide fix, but the court shot down the request. Onorato clearly isn’t giving up.
“Hold tight. Nothing has changed,” Onorato said Friday, according to The Post-Gazette. “I’m disappointed. I think the worse thing that could happen in this county is a government-mandated reassessment.”

This guy is a typical member of the Democrat party. He ran against Roddey saying he would fix the assessment issue and then did nothing. Then, he delayed action through his second election and has done nothing since. He is fighting to do nothing even after being told twice by the highest court in the state to man up and fix the assessment problems. If he can’t deal with a tough issue in his own backyard, why would anyone believe he’ll tackle the tough issues in Harrisburg? This is just one more reason why he is my favorite choice for our prosecutors to run against.

There is a very interesting article at the Allegheny Institute blog that discusses the constitutional issues in the case. That a candidate for Governor could argue that the legislature can pass a law to invalidate the Constitution just goes to show the utter lack of seriousness politicans have about our system. I am concerned that the state house would support this numbskullery.

During the primary campaign last year, our good longtime sweetheart Lt. Gov. Baker Knoll called out Onorato when she got excluded from introducing Bill Clinton at a big rally. She had a real interesting remark when she was asked by a reporter afterwards why she took a swipe at Onorato in that public a way. She said that Onorato was ‘afraid of the men’ in the back rooms. Those are the rich guys who will get hurt by a reassessment and that is why he is avoiding it.

I think Dan Onorato has handled this situation well. He is correct in confronting this reassessment. Dan Onorato is not afraid of the rich guy in the room. He is trying to be an advocate for home/ property owners in Allegheny County. This type of re-assessment… for Allegheny to face is asinine and gives a distinct advantage to surrounding counties. Dan has also been an advocate and a leader tested under fire in tough economic times. Critics can snip from the side, but Dannie O is a leader, I think not a follower when hes clearly trying to do the right thing here for every homeowner and taxpayer.
Allegheny County is held to one standard, whereby nearby high end Murrysville is 2 yards away and held to a different standard…
Onorato is looking out for hardworking middle class families… to mention rich people as you do does not come without a motive.

Look. The guy said he would do the reassessment ‘right’ and railed against Roddey to win. That was a campaign promise. He did nothing. He broke the campaign promise. I did not know Baker Knoll thought so little of him but there is hope in the world if a pure Democrat like Baker Knoll and I can find common ground.

So when a Dem fights tax increases, he’s doing a terrible job, but when a Dem supports tax increases, he’s doing a terrible job?
I suppose there’s just no winning with some of you.

The point is that he ran away from taxing the big shots but couldn’t wait to tax the shot glass and beer of the average guy.

Greg – this is not “fighting taxes”, this is ignoring the law and the courts and pretending nothing has changed in 5 years.
It is helping people living in wealthy areas avoid paying the taxes they owe, and it is making people living in poor areas PAY MORE TAXES THAN THEY SHOULD.
Why is he fighting? It is not for the people of the county. It is because if they reassess, his dreams of being Governor are over. Purely politically motivated sleazeball move.

Everyday we see that the few money people are getting their way while we the people get the shaft. Corporatist Democrats like Onorato are the last thing we need in state office. We need to weed out the influence of money on government or we will end up with another GOP governor.

The state holding Allegheny County to one standard and all surrounding counties to another standard needs to be fixed in Harrisburg. I am hoping Onorato will be able to fix this when he is elected guv. Go Dan

WESTPADEM6 .. He hasn’t fixed it in Allegheny County. He won’t fix it in Harrisburg. Remember what sweet, honest Cathy Baker Knoll said: Onorato is afraid of the money guys. He’s just like Rubin or Rahm. They are in it for themselves and their wallets. Rubin paid off his banker pals and we got the financial collapse and bailouts. Rahm is paying off his insurance and big drug pals and we are losing the fight for health care. Dan Onorato is the lap dog of the big money guys and we should not forget it.
