NETROOTS ROUNDUP: Sestak wins a poll, Specter makes a call and Toomey comes to town

pa2010.com Central was sorry not to be in Pittsburgh for this past weekend’s Netroots Nation convention. But we’ve pledged to bring you the news always, even if we’re not the ones breaking it. With that in mind, here’s a quick rundown of what happened in The Steel City.

The big news might be that Congressman Joe Sestak (D-7) easily won a straw-poll of the liberal bloggers who had egged him on in his decision to challenge Republican-turned-Democratic Senator Arlen Specter. Forty-eight percent of the bloggers backed Sestak, compared to only 10 percent for Specter. A third of respondents were still undecided, Politico reports.

Our friends at Politico also report on an interesting moment when Specter, right in front of the bloggers, dialed up Senator Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) to call him out on his giving credence to the false rumors about government “death panels” in the emerging health care reform legislation. Grassley didn’t appreciate that, igniting quite the Twitter war.

And not to be left out of the blogging fun, Republican Pat Toomey spoke to the Netroots’ counterpart RightOnline conference on Friday, CQ Politics reports.

“I would argue, and in fact I think it’s almost indisputable, that we have the most liberal elected government in the history of the republic.” Toomey said. “There’s no balance in Washington. There’s a single party that’s in complete control of the government. The Republican Party is reduced to the party of bystanders, and the guys who are in control are attempting a really unprecedented lurch to the left.”

Let’s all hope that Toomey keeps up that kind of talk.
Given Obama’s landslide win in ’08, it is clear that the nation had lurched way, way too far to the right and voters very much want a correction which is now in progress.
I very much doubt PA voters, having substantially contributed to the Obama victory and GOP repudiation, will want to flagellate themselves by voting for Toomey.
As for Sestak, I watched a portion of his NN session and he comported himself quite well. Specter is going to have a tough time in the primary. If Joe’s voting record is all Arlen has to go after, he’s in deep trouble.
