Editorial helped prompt Gerlach’s attack
When Congressman Jim Gerlach (R-6) called on state Attorney General Tom Corbett to resign office or drop his gubernatorial aspirations, he wasn’t the first one to make that suggestion. Gerlach’s opening-attack echoed an editorial published the day before in The Leader-Vindicator, as well as increasing press attention to criticism of Corbett’s “Bonusgate” probe.
In response to a question from pa2010.com, Gerlach acknowledged that the editorial and other articles had helped prompt the attack.
He also seemed to slightly dodge a question about Corbett’s defense that no one can judge the corruption investigation until all the cards are on the table, instead reiterating his stance that Corbett simply can’t prosecute and campaign at the same time.
“It’s an obvious conflict [Corbett] can avoid by suspending his campaign for governor until these public corruption investigations are concluded, or he could resign as Attorney General to pursue his aspiration for next year,” Gerlach said during a conference call with reporter. “He shouldn’t have it both ways. Politicians in Harrisburg want to have it both ways. People are tired of that.
“Make the call,” he said.

Darn right. Can’t have your cake and it eat it too. This is the biggest corruption scandal in the history of PA politics. We need a full-time AG whose investigation isn’t clouded by not wanting to anger political party leaders whose blessing can make or break a run for higher office. Resign now Mr. Corbett, or suspend your campaign and put your staff back on the public payroll so all hands are on deck in the AG’s office.
