Welcome to Suburban Snapshot on pa2010.com
I suppose you could call me a political newcomer. Politics isn’t always friendly to new faces. But ever since I got involved with former Senator Rick Santorum’s campaign in 2006, I’ve been hooked. I’ve worked on the 2007 Bucks County Open Space Referendum. I’ve worked on various campaigns in Montgomery County. I’m a Republican committeewoman in Towamencin.
Journalism used to be my thing, and over the course of 20 years, I wrote for The Philadelphia Inquirer, Chestnut Hill Local, Main Line Today Magazine, and the Catholic Standard
This year, Michael Steele, now Chairman of the Republican National Committee, asked me to pen some thoughts in his quest for that office. In October of 2008, I debated the former Ambassador to Portugal, Elizabeth Begley at Chestnut Hill College’s “Faith and Politics” forum on behalf of the McCain campaign. Just two weeks ago, I was a guest on Sirius/XM radio for “The New School,” a political talk radio show based in Washington, where in the sea of liberal media I extolled the virtues of the Republican Party.
Personally, I was fortunate to live in Conshohocken, Montgomery County for most of my life, with a wonderful father, Dr. Joseph F. Leary, a humble dentist who loved his hometown and fellow citizens, and who would regale me with stories of when Conshohocken was a “one-horse town.” I’m proud to be the fourth generation of Leary’s in the area. My father shaped me with unique skills, only back then they weren’t called skills. He taught me to love all people without any labels. His love of history, people and faith in humanity has formed me into someone who is now putting people skills to good use. And now I’m honored to be a blogger for pa2010.com as we approach this critical election cycle.
My father’s untimely death in 2003 catapulted me into the world of politics, where I found that it’s not something you only do every November; rather, it’s a daily obsession. For me, it means finding out about issues, crafting strategies, communicating, generating positive buzz about your candidate, helping unknowns get known, making introductions, getting good people involved in the party, reaching out to others and finding out what makes people tick.
People on both sides of the aisle often share with their political thoughts, concerns, hopes and desires. And because I’m involved in community events, I’m always out and about, trying to get a glimpse of what’s going on.
My focus in this blog will be heavily on events, what is actually going on-in GOP politics or otherwise. About who is going to run, who is raising money, who is coming in, as well as hearing from someone standing on a corner waiting for a taxi. You never know where you are going to hear something unique and interesting about t he upcoming 2010 race.
So let me know if you have any events you would like me to attend in your area. If they aren’t on my radar, send me a blip and I’ll get them on. You can reach me at beth@pa2010.com.
