Vacancy in PA-6 is good news for Dems

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted largely due to the budget impasse that Senate Republicans have perpetuated, but at least we got some good news today.

With Congressman Jim Gerlach’s (R-6) announcement that he will run for governor next year, his seat will be wide open and very winnable for a Democrat.

Former Philadelphia Inquirer editorial writer Doug Pike has done an outstanding job of putting together a campaign team. He has also done the necessary legwork as it relates to two critical components: organized people and organized money.

When you meet with Doug, you can’t help but feel that he is totally committed to the race next year and has done everything to increase his name recognition.

Oh, and he’s incredibly smart.

Abe – I predict that Gerlach will drop out of the race by the time of the state GOP endorsement, if not sooner. Gerlach has no chance of winning statewide in a party increasingly dominated by religious conservatives and extreme libertarians. Furthermore, Gerlach has always been a dutiful lieutenant to the state GOP. Also, the state and national GOP will recognize that Gerlach is their best (and perhaps their only) hope to hold on to PA-6. The powers that be will prevail upon him to run for re-election. What I find telling is the different reactions of Corbett and Meehan. Corbett is clearly scared of the competition. Meehan is confident. And Corbett has reason to be afraid – he’s not a gifted or natural politician and lacks his own loyal following. No AG has ever been elected governor! The odds are long, but my money is on Meehan to win the nomination.
