The top-5 Republican endorsements

Everyone loves endorsements, even if there’s not much evidence that they make any difference when voters go to the polls. A candidate will call a big press conference, trot out the endorser, who will read prepared, glowing remarks while the endorsee stands by with a big smile on his her or face.

As the 2010 elections approach, pa2010.com humbly offers up our take on the five most-coveted Republican endorsements. Each of these endorsers could offer candidates something a little different, be it money, political organization or credibility with a certain group of voters.

Don’t agree with our order? Think we missed one? Make your voice heard by posting a comment.

Tomorrow: The top-5 Democratic endorsements.

5. Bill Scranton

The son of former Governor Bill Scranton, himself a former Lieutenant Governor, is out of politics now, telling pa2010.com recently that he’s happily “on the sidelines.” But he stil commands a following among Republicans and even some conservative Democrats, especially in his northeast Pennsylvania base. GOP candidates lacking name recognition but looking for a credibility boost would be well-served if they could get him to a podium on their behalf.

4. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review editorial page

Sure, newspaper readership is plummeting, but there are still people who look to the pre-election editorial to help them make up their minds. As the conservative standard-bearer for publishing in the Keystone State, owner Richard Mellon Scaife has established a potent perch of political power. Expect anyone who gets his newspaper’s endorsement to shout it loud—and blast it to reporters before it even goes to press.

3. Rick Santorum

Yes, the former Senator got trounced in 2006. And yes, many conservatives see Senate candidate Pat Toomey as their new political standard-bearer. But Santorum remains a darling of many in the Republican base. His transition from politician to pundit has given him airtime, and lots of it. He no longer holds office, but he still holds serious sway over Republican politics.

2. Tom Ridge

The former Governor might not be the most-loved Republican in the conservative wing, which helped dash his chance of being John McCain’s pick for VP. But as someone who left office at the president’s call, he still commands a great deal of loyalty within the GOP, and even among some Democrats. More importantly, he’s a name and a face that everyone knows.

And the No. 1 GOP endorsement in Pennsylvania is… Bob Asher

The state’s lead Republican National Committeeman usually keeps a low-profile publicly—but behind the scene he’s a powerbroker in the purest sense. Political action committees that are affiliated can bankroll candidates by themselves. He’s arguably more tied into the national GOP power structure than anyone in the state. He was the one trying to recruit Ridge into the Senate race, and he’s always on the lookout for strong candidates. He’s not necessarily someone who will take the podium for a high-profile endorsement. But if you’re a Republican and want to win statewide, it’s best to have Bob Asher on your side.

Correction: This article originally misstated the newspaper owned by Richard Mellon Scaife. It is The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, not The Post-Gazette.

Would love to see this list split b/w elected or previously elected officials and fundraisers.

    OOPS!

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review is owned by Scaife.

Excuse me, but isn’t Mr. Asher a convicted felon? And wasn’t he convicted of ripping off taxpayers?

  4. GOPHAWK

    Jul 23rd, 2009

Don’t get on your high horse, Obamarox. You’ve got a nag in your stable – Ed Spendell’s friend Vince Fumo. In fact, because Ed wrote on his behalf, he’ll be getting less time than Asher.

  5. Joe Hart

    Jul 23rd, 2009

Agreed GOPHAWK. W/O Asher we would consistently be underfunded across the state.

Speaking of Richard Scaife, did anyone else notice in Sestak’s FEC reports that Scaife maxed out to him? Does that qualify as an endorsement for Sestak?

And doesn’t that raise questions about who the real Democrat is in the race if Scaife is supporting Sestak?

  7. David Diano

    Jul 23rd, 2009

    Stosh-
I brought up this very point last week when the campaign finance reports came out.

The Republicans I talk to (the ones that donate max, and bundle, and hold fundraiser) are pushing for Sestak because they believe he’s not only the weaker candidate, but because they feel it’s their best opportunity to take back the seat.

Some of the Sestak supporters mistakenly ignore this criticism by claiming I’m being defeatist about Dems ability to hold the seat. I’ve got a better chance of being struck by lightning while winning the Powerball jackpot, than Sestak losing the PA-7th seat in the 2010 election. However, the chance of Dems winning it without Sestak’s $$ millions (raised to hold the seat) is closer to a coin flip.

If the BIG MONEY Specter supporters want to get the max bang-for-the-buck, they should give money to Specter AND Kortz. The more viable Kortz becomes, the more it’s a three-way race, the less chance Sestak has. Any vote Kortz gets, is a non-Specter vote that Sestak would have gotten.

I think it’s hard to measure the effects of endorsements, but I believe they are more effective then you make it seem. They give the candidate some more press (and if they were useless why do the media eat them up) and they give the candidate credibility, especially one with low name recognition.

This article is enlightening. Pat Toomey is vulnerable. As a former Mortgage Derivatives Trader and Toomey’s 1999 House Resolution 10
that killed the 60 year old Glass/Steagle Act, which seperated banks, investment houses, and insurance companies, Toomey’s ties to the current finacial crisis and condition make the man unelectable. Then we have Toomey’s support for MFN with Communist China and it’s impact on the entire western worlds production base, in Pennsylvania, where labor is bringing Arlen Specter to the reality of losing to undeclared candidate, House Democrat, Joe Sestak because of labors voice in western PA.
The Republican Party needs direction away from the Internationalists in the Democratic Party.
    1. The Republican Party needs to capitalize on Nationalism. Then use nationalism to reign in trade disparities. Like MFN with COMMUNIST CHINA !! Mr Clintons fast track, Oked by the 50. What a destructive streak that has bred for the western world’s production, labor and society. Now COMMUNIST CHINA has our jobs and holds our debt, is that in the best interest of these USofA ? Seems UnConstitutional..
    2. There need not be a division between labor and business. They are the same interest. Jobs, Tax revenue, Harmonious Society as the Constitution refers..
    3. Clean Air need not be a global warming issue, we all have to breathe.. see my energy page
    4. The current healthcare fiasco is laughable, insuring perpetual profit for private insurance companies is criminal and likely an unConstitutional breach.
    5. Public Institutions have a place in a well ordered sociecty. Public Banks, Public Healthcare. These two items would put well over 90 Trillion Dollars back into the pockets of the 150 million working Americans over a 30 year period. Healthcare is likely 750 billion a year, if you cut out the insurance companies.. Working America could afford to pay taxes for Healthcare, with the Golden Calf (banking and insurance) melted into $2 trillion in coin in our pockets.
I’m a registered Republican. But, i DO NOT think like the current internationalist, extremists.. We need candidates that will protect AMERICA FIRST. Not borrow against future taxes to build a missle sheild over Europe so they become more disengaged..
Thanks for letting me post.. mike mentzer

More importantly than become protectionist, we need to act out and message properly against big government and big business…………..the way bakc is talking about small business, ending bailouts, and talking school choice.

    Dan,

A good list but don’t forget the significance of out-of-state endorsements, either. A good word from Sarah Palin, Mitt Romney, or even George Bush can make a big difference in some quarters. And of course, Republicans get linked with Bush whether they like it or not . . .

  12. Joe Hart

Dan-I would love to break these down b/w elected officials and non-elected officials.

Mr. Asher has done far more harm than good to the Republican Party. He is the reason we have 8 years of Ed Rendell. Asher is the one who forced Mike Fischer down our throats, and told Schweiker to sit at the back of the bus. Schweiker would have creamed Rendell. Remember Swann? Yep, an Asher pick. Now, Asher is promoting Mike Fischer Part Deux, Tom Corbett, instead of looking for someone who can win. Look at what Asher did in his own backyard to split and weaken the party with numerous ploys and incompetence. Can anyone say backstabber Jim Matthews? Yeah, he’s an Asher guy. Mr. PFA Tom Ellis, who lost endorsement for re-election as incumbent County COmmissioner, then got creamed in a statewide race Asher couldn’t even see he would lose? Yeah, so really, we’d actually be much better off without Asher’s money. The strings of incompetence and cronyism that come with it are definitely not worth the price. Unless people like having eight years of Rendell, followed by eight years of Onorato, and backstabbers like Jim Matthews running loose.

Honest Abe, glad to see you put your actual name up while trashing Asher. You have the courage of Abraham Lincoln let me tell ya. As we’ve seen in gubernatorial elections parties switch every 8 years cyclically since like forever. Asher pulled Ridge from relative obscurity and amassed an organization to win back Hburgh. You didn’t quite mention him.

As far as MontCo is concerned, can you really blame the guy for demographic shifts in the electorate? I mean come on people, get off your high horses. Yes the infighting has to end but it’s a two way street.

    Jul 24th, 2009

Nice to see Scranton on the list. Talk about a “what could have been” and maybe “still be”.

  17. NEPA Guy

    Jul 25th, 2009

Bill Scranton serves as Chairman of the Board of Allied Services in Scranton, a rehabilitation hospital. The Vice Chairman and Immediate Past Chairman is Louis Denaples, who was indicted for perjury over his alleged ties to organized crime.

The President of the hospital is Atty. Bill Conaboy, a former PA Gaming Board member who resigned after relative, who also worked for the Gaming Commision, “dropped” his girlfriend out a 22nd story window in Harrisburg.

Conaboy also serves as a bank board director for First National Community Bank of Dunmore, Denaples is the suspended Chairman of the Board of that bank, and it’s largest shareholder.

“Kids for Cash” Judge Michael T. Conahan of Luzerne County was also on the bank board until he resigned.

With connections like this that Bill Scranton has, I don’t think his endorsement would mean much, it may even be the kiss of death in a reform minded PA electorate.

  18. Honest Abe

    Jul 25th, 2009

Joe Hart, you’re joking right? The only reason Ridge won is because he was the only pro-choice moderate running against four conservatives, who split their support. Ridge had the luxury of running against Mike “I make Bob Dole look sexy” FIscher and Ernie “I’m going to get pinched by the Feds” Preate. You have no clue what you’re talking about. Go study up, and come back when you know learn something.

  19. Joe Hart

    Jul 26th, 2009

Yeah and Asher bank rolled him and made him formidable. I think its you that has very little clue what you’re talking about.

Your facts are speculative and purely opinion. It is fact that the governor of PA is from a different party every 8 years and that the last Republican, Tom Ridge had his campaign chaired by Bob Asher, got significant cash from him, etc.

I think its you who has his head up his holier than thou assss……

  20. Abeisdishonest

    Jul 27th, 2009

Honest Abe – You seem to have a convenient problem with the truth. The fact is Asher helped Ridge. No one can dispute that. But what you seem to have a problem with is the facts of 1994. Ridge was running against two pro-lifers (Fisher and Preate) and another Pro-Choicer (Sam Katz). Katz was also from the Philly media market, which made Ashers support more important and Ridges win more impressive.

At least get your facts straight before you trash someone. And for God Sakes, spell Fisher right.
