NRSC endorses Toomey
The National Republican Senatorial Committee endorsed former Lehigh Valley Congressman Pat Toomey on Tuesday, effectively ending the search for an alternative GOP candidate at the national level.
“Congressman Pat Toomey’s life experience and public service make him uniquely qualified to serve Pennsylvanians in the U.S. Senate,” NRSC head John Cornyn said in a statement. “Through hard work and self-reliance, Pat Toomey has successfully represented a Democrat-leaning district and accomplished much in his private sector endeavors. Congressman Toomey is a vigorous and determined advocate for the people of Pennsylvania, and he is clearly guided by principles instead of political opportunism.”
Despite doubts that Toomey can win in a general election and efforts by moderate Republicans to find another candidate—Tom Ridge and Jane Orie were both courted—Toomey increasingly seems like the GOP’s only viable candidate.
“I am honored to have the National Republican Senatorial Committee’s endorsement along with the wave of support I have received from people all across Pennsylvania,” Toomey said in a statement. “Pennsylvanians are looking for thoughtful policies instead of the extremism they are witnessing in Washington today. Over the next sixteen months, I will continue to bring my message of fiscal responsibility, political balance, and economic growth to voters across the Commonwealth.”

This now leaves Meehan with 2 real choices, 1. Announce for Governor right now to keep Gerlach in check, or 2. Declare for the 7th Congressional and make Sestak stick to his promise to run against Arlen or face potential defeat with a revitalized Delaware County Republican apparatus hungry to recapture the district.

Meehan won’t beat Welch. Welch has too much money and too much of a head start, and has a compelling story to tell. As for Governor, that’s a foo’s errand as well. Best he can shoot for is lt. governor. A bird in the hand….
