Vacation tidbits…

OK, it’s vacation, but here are two quick thoughts anyway:

1. There are signs all over Northeast Philadelphia that read “Lost Jobs?  Blame Arlen Specter” and say something about the Employee Free Choice Act.  But wasn’t Specter leaning toward supporting EFCA?  Boy, it’s enough to make you feel sorry for the guy.

2.  Also, check out the interesting writeup in the Inquirer today about MontCo Commissioner Bruce Castor. State GOP Chairman Bob Asher says he’s “not … on the face of the earth” politically speaking. But the GOP isn’t exactly swimming in talent, and Castor is ambitious and talented. A dollar says he runs for statewide office in the next five years, and maybe even wins.

Specter is not leaning toward supporting the strong version of the legislation, and that’s what currently matters while we’re debating it in the abstract. He’s working on some weak watered-down compromise and will try to play hero later in the year to get union endorsements. I think Sestak should come out immediately for the strong version of EFCA and try to peel off smaller local union support in the event that Specter eventually gets endorsed by the big national unions. Endorsements don’t mean crap unless union guys are out knocking doors for you.
