Pulling teeth in the 13th…
Still getting back into the swing of things after a death in my family and my recent Italy trip, so I haven’t had much time for interviews just yet. But I was intrigued to see that Republican Damian Dachowski, a Huntingdon Valley dentist, apparently will run against Democratic Congresswoman Allyson Schwartz in the 13th District. Having once run in an even more heavily Democratic district, I have grudging admiration for long-shot candidates, especially those without much political experience.A quick trip to Dachowski’s Web site reveals the following:
1. He’s much better looking than I am.
2. He has more money (at least judging from the Web site).
3. He’s going to try to make an issue of Schwartz being beholden to special interests (which she is) and of health care (he’s a dentist and she used to run an abortion, whoops, woman’s health facility). In the trade, this is called “going after someone’s strength.” It didn’t quite work out for Marina Kats or Melissa Brown in the same district, but who knows?
Here’s a thought, Damian: Why don’t you take a look at Schwartz’s lengthy list of donors and see how many of them have been bailed out by the Feds? And why don’t you see how many other dentists feel threatened by the new health-care legislation and want to have one of their own in Congress? Everyone thinks Schwartz is invincible, but whenever she has had a serious opponent, the election has been pretty close.
I’ll be following this and other local races more closely as time goes on.
