Forgetting Mike Long

MIDDLE OF NOWHERE, CANADA—Writing from the family summer cottage, so excuse the slower pace of the news this week.

I’ve been enjoying watching the reaction to our Top 10 Political Consultants list. But I’ve heard from several folks who think I committed a grave oversight by leaving Mike Long off the list.

Frankly, I think they’re right.

Long has worked heavily with state Senate Republicans in recent years. The fact that the GOP still has such strong control over the chamber, in this political climate, is pretty amazing. From what I hear, Long deserves at least a fair amount of credit.

So, without making a political statement of course, pa2010.com offers Long a kudos for his work.

Back to the sun.

Here is an observation. Mike Long is being lauded for maintaining the majority in the State Senate for the Republicans. You don’t note that for all those years he was continuously on the State Senate Republican Caucus staff. So, put him on your list, but you should note that he did it all while working on the public’s dime. You should have a blog post about why Corbett hasn’t indicted Mike Long (who received the largest bonus of any state legislative employee)even though everyone in the Capitol knows he spent a large portion of his time on the state payroll working on campaigns.

Setting aside whether Mike Long really is a successful political consultant (didn’t he manage to lose the re-election campaigns of the top two leaders in his caucus?), I find it fascinating that a longtime PUBLIC employee is being recognized for his many years of POLITICAL efforts that put to shame those of the “Bonusgate” defendants.

You’re kidding? Mike Long? The guy that lost both top leadership positons in a PRIMARY in 2006? And lost them while he was working out of his state office, likely illegally?

Funny, the Attorney General seems to think they’re something wrong with running political operations out of state legislative offices. Maybe that’s only when Democrats do it.

Here’s the deal. Mike Long was won most races when his candidates had huge monetary and/or voter registration advantages over the opposition. But look at the races where Long’s opposition had equal resources, and you’ll see Mike Long LOSES a lot more often than he wins. Long has never won a Congressional race, and he doesn’t win very many “tough” races. He wins the easy races. Take away his sugar daddies, Jubilerer and Scarnati, and Long is nothing. FInally it’s hard to respect a guy who is known for making James Carville look like a clean campaigner by comparison. Mike Long is the dirtiest, nastiest fighter on the planet. He strikes below the belt.
