Toomey says he’ll be GOP’s candidate, dodges on waterboarding
Republican Senate candidate Pat Toomey said Monday that he would be the party’s nominee for Senate next year, The Patriot-News reports.
Speaking at the Pennsylvania Press Club, Toomey described the race as “an open seat.”
“The question Pennsylvanians are going to ask is: Is Arlen Specter trustworthy?” Toomey said. “He went around the state saying he would remain in the Republican Party. He said it was important that there be a check in the Senate against an automatic Democratic majority. Then he reads one poll result and switches parties.”
Toomey also declined to say whether or not waterboarding qualifies as torture, The Morning Call reports.
His comments came as the former Congressman is trying to convince Republicans that he can win a general election, even as party leaders continue to grasp for a more moderate candidate to go up against Specter, the likely Democratic nominee, in the fall.

This is the same old song we’ve heard from Toomey and the far right for the past several years. They aren’t afraid to come out against the abstract idea of torture, but when it comes down to it, Toomey and his friends on that side of the spectrum refuse to stand up for human rights and say that actual acts of torture are an unacceptable practice for this republic.
