Specter Flip-Flop Alert
By PAT TOOMEY FOR U.S. SENATE
Allentown, PA – Today, Arlen Specter announced that he is considering flip-flopping on Card Check yet again, saying the “prospects are good” for a compromise on the legislation.
In September of 2004, Senator Specter was the only Republican senator to co-sponsor Card Check (S. 1925), which would deprive workers of their right to a secret ballot election in the union organization process, and voted to advance Card Check in June of 2007 (RC #227). In March of 2009, facing the prospect of a Pat Toomey primary challenge, Sen. Specter announced that he would vote against Card Check. A month later, when Senator Specter became a Democrat, he assured workers and businesses that “my position on Employees Free Choice (Card Check) will not change.”
Now, facing the prospect of a Democratic primary challenger, Specter is eager to flip-flop once again, leaving many to wonder if there is no principle he won’t throw overboard for the sake of holding onto his political power.
“Arlen Specter had the right position on Card Check for a grand total of six weeks,” said Toomey Communications Director Nachama Soloveichik, “but it is clear that his short-lived support for workers was motivated by politics, not principle. Like his party affiliation and so many other issues, one never knows how long Senator Specter will support a given position. This kind of power-hungry flip-flopping is exactly the kind of behavior that upsets Pennsylvania voters-regardless of their party affiliation.”
