The In-Specter

Quid pro quo from Big Labor

“Call and tell Senator Specter Pennsylvania’s for him . . . as long as he’s for the Employee Free Choice Act.”

That’s the quid pro quo coming at the end of a new ad sponsored by “American Rights At Work,” a self described “non-partisan, nonprofit organization whose mission is to support workers’ rights to a free choice and a fair chance to join a union.” I saw their newest ad last night in prime-time, during the NBA playoffs. Citing Specter’s past support of the EFCA, the ad implores him to stand with “with Obama, Biden, and the working families of Pennsylvania, or with greedy CEOs and big business lobbyists” on Employee Free Choice.

For his part, Specter is reportedly working on a compromise bill that would keep most of its key provisions intact. Yet this pointed ad, one of the first going after a politician on a specific issue this far out from the 2010 election, is a prime example of the kind of intense political pressure Specter can continue to expect to have exerted upon him as he gets used to his new party and proceeds to secure the Democratic Senatorial nomination. Specter may still be having trouble remembering who he’s talking about when he says “my party,” but we can tell where he stands based not on what he says, but how he votes.
