My early thoughts on Sestak vs. Specter

While I’m not surprised that Congressman Joe Sestak (D-7) seems ready to make the plunge into the Senate race, I am surprised it happened so soon. Granted, he hasn’t made a formal announcement yet. But I figured he would wait until Specter made some horrible, anti-Democratic vote on some issue.

Sestak’s going to have one hell of a race on his hands. And the party unity that leading Democrats were hoping for just went out the window. There’s a lot of resentment for Specter among rank-and-file Democrats. And while they’re not so crazy about Sestak either, you can bet many of them will be lining up behind the guy who’s been a Democrat for more than a month.

What’s funny is that this completes the 180-degree turnaround in the political landscape. A month ago, the GOP primary was the one to watch and the Democratic primary was a snoozer. Talk about a reversal.

This could get ugly. And fast.
