From the readers: Benefits of a spokesman-less Specter

Reader “Steve” responds to my story about Senator Arlen Specter not having a campaign spokesman, and he makes some good points as to the benefits for Specter.

Steve writes:

“Three benefits to having NO Comm Dir.:
1)     lighter payroll
2)     keeps the media at bay
3)   makes the candidate and camp mgr the people with “the message” (that way it gets screwed-up less)”

Payroll certainly isn’t a problem for a guy with almost $7 million in the bank. But Steve’s probably right about No. 2 and No. 3. Message control could be a particular concern with Specter seeming to have a hard time remembering what team he’s on now.
