Corbett still leads in guv poll—most undecided

Continuing to benefit from his superior name recognition, Attorney General Tom Corbett holds a significant lead over his potential GOP competitors for the party’s gubernatorial nomination, according to a new poll.

The Franklin & Marshall poll, which asked registered Republicans who they would vote for if the primary were today, found 22 percent backing Corbett. But the vast majority of voters—63 percent—said they didn’t know who they would support. The poll was taken before Senator Arlen Specter said he would switch parties earlier this week, and with most Republicans focused on the Senate race, the poll could simply reflect a lack of early interest in the gubernatorial race.

Five percent of voters surveyed supported Congressman Jim Gerlach (R-6) for the office and 3 percent backed former U.S. Attorney Pat Meehan, while 7 percent said they’d back “some other candidate.”

Corbett is seen as the early front-runner by most party insiders because of his two statewide election victories as Attorney General, the more recent one coming last year during a wave of Democratic victories.

The undecideds in most of polls were very high. The public is still absorbing the marathon 2008 race. The Specter news is bigger to the public at large because it shifts the balance of power in the Senate than as an election 2010 story (for the moment).
Other than the political junkies, few have thought much about the 2010 races and the potential field of candidates.

This poll seems to reflect name recognition more than anything else. Corbett is in a statewide office. Here in the 7th district, it’s “Gerlach who?” despite being next to Gerlach’s 6th district.

I wouldn’t put much stake in any early poll.
