Corbett loses round to Meehan, sort of
Let’s see: Vince Fumo was convicted this winter on all 137 charges brought against him by the office once run by Pat Meehan, who wants to be governor. But this week, a judge dismissed charges against former state Representative Mike Veon, saying there wasn’t sufficient evidence to make the “Bonusgate” charges stick in court.
While Veon still faces more charges, that would appear to make Meehan the winner over state Attorney General Tom Corbett in the effort to bring down the unethical/obstructionist/criminal wheeler-dealing that goes on among Pennsylvania state legislators.
The word is, however, that while Meehan has had a tough time gaining traction, and that Congressman Jim Gerlach (R-6) is seriously considering a jump into the race, Corbett is looking to turn his exploratory run for governor into the real deal AFTER the state budget is passed.
Raise your hand if you’re holding your breath for that epic Harrisburg showdown to be finished by July 1.
Meehan, meanwhile, is still looking at his GOP primary chances against Corbett, but might also have to set his sights on Lt. Govern0r —a post good for nothing except gaining some statewide name recognition.
There’s talk — ghoulish, at best — that GOP leaders might want someone like Meehan at their immediate disposal IF Arlen Specter were to win re-election in 2010, but then suffer some kind of medical setback before the end of his term.
Politics is such a nice game.
