Asher: Ridge would be an ‘excellent candidate’

State Republican big-wig Bob Asher says former Gov. Tom Ridge would make an ideal Senate candidate for the party, and has made moves to encourage him into the race, Capitolwire reports (subscription only).

Asher, an RNC committeeman, had a poll commissioned through his political action committee. The poll, conducted by Specter’s old pollster and circulated among reporters yesterday, showed Ridge beating Senator Arlen Specter in a potential general election matchup, 48 percent to 41 percent.

“I think Tom Ridge would be an excellent candidate for Senate, and a great standard-bearer for our party in a very, very important election in 2010,” Asher told Capitolwire.

“The results [of the poll] are very encouraging for Republicans, and especially for former Governor Ridge,” Asher added. “Even though Tom has not run for political office in nearly eleven years, he remains extraordinarily popular in the state and he leads Senator Specter in a trial heat by seven points. … Personally, I am committed to helping the Republican party win back this Senate seat so that Democrats in the Senate don’t have a blank check to continue their out of control spending.”

  1. Ridges is Quality, but aren't there others?

But what is Asher going to do with quality people, moderates who may want to serve but are stifled by the same old people being slated over and over again?? New faces show up, but they are quite what folks like him are looking for. What happens when he runs out of those, top rated, quality people, when they become to disillusioned to run and serve because the line is so long of folks who served and get recycled??

What are the poll numbers in a race against Pat Toomey? Those are most likely the ONLY numbers Gov. Ridge is looking at right now.
