Torsella: Nothing changes

Even though Arlen Specter is now his key Democratic opponent, Joe Torsella says his run for Senate is on as planned.

“Nothing about today’s news regarding Senator Specter changes that, or my intention to run for the Democratic nomination to the Senate in 2010—an election that is still a full year away,” Torsella added.

Considering the close ties Torsella has to Specter, there had been some speculation that he might be a placeholder in case Specter switched parties. Torsella struck down that theory in his statement.

“I decided to run for the United States Senate from Pennsylvania for one simple reason: I believe we need new leadership, new ideas, and new approaches in Washington,” Torsella added. “It’s become obvious that the old ways of doing business might have worked for the special interests, but they haven’t worked for the rest of us.”

It’s good to hear that Torsella isn’t backing down from a primary battle with Specter. We need a Democrat like him who can work well with the party and bring innovative and fresh ideas to the table. Specter might have changed his affiliation, but his views and record haven’t changed.

He said it best himself. It’s time for new ideas and new leadership. Specter might have switched his parties, but he still has the same tired views. Go Torsella.
