Toomey Admits to Pa GOP Chair Why Toomey Would Be a Terrible Senator
By ARLEN SPECTER FOR SENATE
Harrisburg – Pat Toomey admitted to Pennsylvania GOP Chairman Rob Gleason eight weeks ago that he would be a disinterested, lackluster U.S. Senator, according to press reports yesterday.
Toomey, woefully lacking understanding of the overall role of a Senator, told Gleason that he didn’t want to be in the Senate and “be number 100 and vote ‘no’ on everything,” according to an interview with the website PoliticsPA.com.
“Pat Toomey doesn’t understand what it truly means to be a United States Senator,” said Christopher Nicholas, campaign manager for Sen. Arlen Specter. “While voting is very important, Senators must also act as vigorous advocates for the needs and interests of their state, otherwise it’s a waste of a Senate seat. He may have been able to get away with that do-nothing attitude as a Congressman, when he was one of 19 Representatives, but not as a Senator. We only have two.”
Toomey’s admission to Gleason also shows that Toomey would be a passive Senator, rather than a fighter for Pennsylvania. “Whether people agree or not with Sen. Specter, they understand he is a tireless advocate for Pennsylvania, which is as it should be,” said Nicholas.
Erie County GOP Chairman Brad Moore said: “Senator Specter has served this Commonwealth well and has the seniority and respect in the U.S. Senate that Pat Toomey could never match. Bottom line — Senator Specter gets things done. Like other Republicans, I don’t always agree with Senator Specter on every policy decision; however, he has always listened and carefully considered opposing viewpoints. It is one of his hallmarks as a member of the United States Senate.”
Earlier press reports detailed that Toomey decided to run for Senate rather than Governor as planned due to the results of a poll he commissioned.
“Toomey entered the race because of a poll and now by his own admission he doesn’t want to do the work of a U.S. Senator,” said Nicholas. “Why should anyone vote for him in the first place?”
