A primary preview? Sestak hits Specter

Congressman Joe Sestak (D-7) said Tuesday night he still hadn’t made up his mind about a Senate run. But in a series of attack lines about Arlen Specter, he offered a peek at the kind of message he could use against the newly-Democratic Senator in a primary.

In comments on MSNBC’s The Ed Show, he echoed the criticism that Specter was choosing political opportunism over principle. But he also sought to blame Specter for the state of the party he left behind.

“He also somehow failed to use his leadership to shape the Republican Party to be towards what he believes in, so he’s now gonna shape the Democratic party?” Sestak said.

Sestak also had a retort for reports that Gov. Ed Rendell and the state Democratic Party are looking to clear the field for Specter.

“The Democrats that really matter here are really not the leadership, it’s what do the democratic voters believe,” he said. “So let’s find that out.”

UPDATE: ON MSNBC EARLIER IN THE DAY, SESTAK MADE SOME SIMILAR POINTS. VIDEO HERE.

Sestak isn’t going to get anywhere without the endorsements of party leaders, who the unions follow.
Sestak will be hard pressed to get the endorsement of the SE PA leadership. He’s walked all over them since he raised his first million, and he hasn’t looked back (yet) and now it’s too late. We are enjoying watching him squirm as his carefully laid plans to escape the 7th District slip through his fingers (again).
